04 Our engraving materials: guarantee and commitment

At Gravotech, quality is much more than a norm or a concept: it is a state of mind driven by continuous improvement. This explains why most of our worldwide-known brands such as Gravoply™, Metallex™, Gravoglas™ 2-plex™ or Gravotac™, have become synonymous with quality and are a reference for competitors to match. We are committed to respect these values raised over the past 60 years and do our utmost to meet your most demanding requirements. To do so, we implemented a Gravotech Quality Charter, which covers a number of technical characteristics that we want respected for our products and ranges:

THE CHOICE IN EACH PRODUCT RANGE

Our wide material range included over 900 references in stock, specially developed for engraving and cutting. "Surface" or "Reverse" engraving, laser marking or cutter engraving, all our ranges of plastic, metal or stratified materials are available in a spectrum of colo u rs, thicknesses between 0.09 mm and 10 mm or .004" and .40" according to the products, and various finishes (matte, glossy, satin, textured, metallic, brushed). The great majority of our materials is also compatible with digital printing. For you, this is the guarantee to find the right product for your application. Thanks to our production units in the United States and in Europe, we are able to offer you custom-made solutions (colo u r, finish, thickness, etc.), even for small quantities. Make sure you contact us!

OPERATING RECOMMENDATIONS AND USE CONDITIONS

Gravotech warrants that its product complies with its technical specification within normal condition of use, without any other warranty including without being limited to any other warranty of merchantability, performance or suitability. Gravotech's warranty covers consumable products for a one (1) month period after the invoice date. The consumable warranty only covers manufacturing defects. Scratches and colo u rimetric variation are expressly excluded from the warranty coverage. Technical specifications come from data and technical reports created by Gravotech, suppliers or external independent laboratory studies. Consequently each end user shall perform appropriate testing under real conditions of use to ensure consistency and adequacy of the product for its intended specific purpose and needs. Nonstandard conditions of use as well as harsh conditions such as UV, hygrometry, salinity or temperature specifics shall be taken into account to avoid any product deterioration. End user shall be liable regarding their own testing results and therefore their final decision regarding suitability of the product according to Gravotech specifications and recommendation.

RAW MATERIALS

Our materials are issued from a selection of the best suppliers worldwide, capable of offering the highest guarantees in terms of organization (ISO*). Our ABS and acrylics are not only pure, they are also selected among the best grades available. Each component is subject to a careful selection process taking into consideration normative and environmental obligations (RoHS**, REACH***). This guarantees the respect of all obligations and requirements demanded by your customers. We will provide written statements on simple request.

05

COLO U RS Colo u r rendering and consistency from one production batch to another are particularly sought after by all graphic arts professionals. UV resistance is an obligation for materials in contact with light, especially for outdoor applications. To enable you to commit in total safety, we set our expectations beyond market standards. Our components selection as well as sourcing decisions are made accordingly. Our operational teams make regular spectral colo u rimeter checks to measure colo u r differences: we compare the light reflected on a random sample with our "Golden Sample". This measurement highlights colo u r discrepancy (or "ΔE") and opacity. This guarantees flawless colo u r and best hold of the material over time.

SIZES, THICKNESS AND FLATNESS Each material sheet is subject to tight squaring at 0.25 mm/metre (.01’’/yd). Our plastic material sizes are larger than the dimensions announced. This guarantees that you benefit from the entire area purchased, even if the plate is clamped on the edges. The thickness of the layers that make up our materials is finely calibrated, and our recipes are perfectly mastered and executed by our engineers and technicians. For Gravoply™ 2, Metallex™, Gravoply™ Laser and Gravoply™ Ultra: the top coat is only a few microns thin. This provides the possibility to achieve extremely fine and aesthetic engraving, minimise the production of chips or fumes and take advantage of your engraving machine’s highest speed and productivity, be it mechanical or laser powered. Gravoply™ 1, Gravoglas™ 2-Plex™ and even Gravotac™: different layers calibrated at 250 microns are assembled by hot pressing in our workshops. Our products are not co-extruded, as this technique cannot guarantee regularity in thickness or material flatness. To obtain the best possible flatness, the "laminating" phase is made in very small batches, and even sometimes by the unit! This ensures accurate and regular depth engraving, as well as quality milling jobs on the entire surface of the material sheet.

PROTECTION, PACKAGING, TRACEABILITY

Our materials are protected individually by a "Gravotech"- personalized, resistant semi-adhesive film, ensuring that engraved or milled surfaces are preserved from pollution or alteration. Each material sheet is also labeled with its reference, designation and production batch number. Because of this, our Quality Assurance system has the traceability information that is required in case defects are found. Our product packaging is adapted for transportion all over the world and has proven its sturdiness. This guarantees that your purchase will maintain it's "premium" quality when it arrives to your location.

The particular care we take in terms of product traceability enables us to consider our customers and partners’ feedback and therefore continue to improve, for the benefit of all.

This is what we call continuous improvement, the drive of our organization and spirit of our company.

* ISO: International Standard Organisation ** RoHS: Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances *** REACH: Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals substances

06 What makes our materials the best?

QUALITY There are several reasons why Gravotech is the best source for engraving materials. We have the most experience in the industry and the most significant number of resources to help you meet your material needs. Our educated Customer Solutions Center, special order capabilities, and unparalleled QUALITY are the greatest reasons to buy your materials from us. Quality is a somewhat vague word. Therefore, we must highlight the unique characteristics which make our materials second to none. RAW MATERIALS All of our raw materials are 100% prime. This means that we do not use any regrinds. We only use virgin materials. This means consistent thickness and consistent colo u r, which means consistent engraving performance. continually applaud our cap consistency. This didn’t happen by accident. We extrude the cap and core separately, then laminate the layers together days after each layer has cooled and solidified. Each layer is continually monitored with an advanced “gamma backscatter gauge” during the entire extrusion process. Final samples are manually “gauged” after extrusion. The cheaper way to produce the material is to marry the layers together while they are in the extrusion process. This is referred to as “co-extrusion”. Problems with this method arise because the products are still in a molten state at this stage. While you can maintain a consistent overall thickness, the thickness of each individual layer cannot be accurately maintained. COLO U R CONSISTENCY We only use colo u r concentrates that are controlled to less than 1ΔE (a variance of 2ΔE qualifies as a commercial colo u r match). A precise method of metering the colo u r concentrate is also employed. During extrusion, the opacity is periodically tested with a calibrated densitometer, which gives a numerical value of ambiguity that is compared to the master value. Finally, the finished product is compared to colo u r masters (which are classified by colo u r and surface finish) under Macbeth colo u r inspection lights.. UV STABLE Our versatile indoor/outdoor materials maintain their original colo u r even in the toughest environments since they are UV stabilized. These materials can also be used for indoor facility signs where UV lighting can affect the colo u r integrity, as well as properties of the plastic. SHEET FLATNESS Gravotech uses an in-line extrusion process, which means the material has never been in roll form. This process removes the inherent curling tendencies of rolled product. Then, the lamination process is controlled (through even temperature distribution) to produce a final flat sheet. More importantly, all our 2- ply indoor materials are actually 3-ply materials. The problem inherent with 2-ply indoor materials originates from the fact that the cap and core are made of different materials. This is true with all major engraving sheet-stock providers (not just Gravotech). What happens in this situation is that the materials are pressed entirely flat during the heated lamination process, but since the two different materials have different expansion/contraction characteristics, the final product tends to curl a little as it cools. To overcome this problem, we put a cap on each side of the core. This layering technique balances the “pulling” from each cap, and the result is a sheet that lays perfectly flat. Therefore, when you purchase a sheet of red/white Gravoply, the sheet is constructed with a red cap, over a white core, over another white cap. Our outdoor sheet stock (Gravoglas 2-Plex) does not require this triple layer effect because the cap and the core are actually made of identical modified acrylic. WHY DO YOU CARE? We understand the importance of colo u r consistency, but perhaps you’ve never considered cap consistency as a fundamental trait. Well, how many times have you had to re-run a job because halfway through completion, the cutter didn’t reach through the cap? It’s incredibly frustrating after a large matrixed job runs for over an hour, and you return only to find out the job has to be re-run. Trying to engrave deeper to compensate can add wear to your cutter, reduce your productivity, and “bleed” characters together. How much time have you spent trying to make a “bowed” sheet lay flat? When creating raised letter signage, how many times, when weeding the profile material from the base material, has it snapped into numerous little pieces requiring extra time to clean? It all comes down to the old adage: “time is money”. It is worth the extra effort to provide a quality product that reduces problem engraving and maximizes your bottom line.

To quickly identify and select the right material for your application needs, look out for the symbols below indicating the main features of each Gravotech material range:

Laserable CO 2 Laserable: Generally applies to acrylic core materials as well as rubber, which can be CO 2 laser engraved and cut. Also suitable for coated or anodized metals. ABS materials can also be CO 2 lasered, although cutting results and lasering quality may vary according to materials and/or colours. Apart from a few exceptions, most CO 2 laserable materials are also rotary engravable. Fibre Laserable: Generally applies to metals, either bare or coated. A wide variety of plastics can also be fibre lasered.

Symbols

Rotary Engravable (with a rotary cutting tool) The most versatile engraving technology. Suitable for most plastic materials and metals.

UV Print UV LED printing material.

Indoor Use Material designed for indoor use which does not require resistance to UV light or changes in the climate.

Outdoor Use Within the limit of technical specifications provided and compliance to standard conditions of use, materials are designed to be resistant to climate and UV variation without significant alteration to its features. Due to wide variety of use conditions, PDU cannot assert material shelf-life.

Surface Engraving 1-Ply, 2-Ply or 3-Ply materials are either lasered or engraved to expose the core of the material, thereby giving a colour contrast between cap (surface layer) and core (base colour).

Subsurface Engraving (also known as reverse engraving) Applies to 1-Ply and 2-Ply clear base materials. The material is lasered or engraved from the back. Once lasered or engraved, the characters and logos can be back-painted to achieve aesthetic colour contrast.

Sublimatable Applies to materials with a polyester coating designed to recieve inks via heat transfer.
